Day 1: です／ます and the polite register
JLPT N5 expects polite speech as the default. です attaches to nouns and na-adjectives; ます ends verbs.
• 私[わたし]は学生[がくせい]です。 — I am a student.
• 水[みず]を飲[の]みます。 — I drink water.
Trap: do not mix だ／である textbook style into N5 listening options — the exam voice is polite.
